To the world, the Eden Philanthropic Foundation is the largest and most impactful private charitable organization in human history. It funds hospitals, schools, clean energy initiatives, and conflict resolution programs on every inhabited continent. Its annual budget dwarfs most national governments. Its board members include former heads of state, Nobel laureates, and titans of industry.
None of that is untrue. But it is incomplete.
The Foundation was built by Eva and Adamocles Eden over centuries of careful, patient institution-building — not out of altruism alone, but out of necessity. Two immortals who understand the real forces shaping human civilization need leverage, infrastructure, and reach. The Foundation provides all three. Its headquarters occupies the Flatiron Building in New York City — public floors above, five secure sub-levels below.
Healthcare infrastructure, educational endowments, humanitarian response, energy transition funding. The Foundation's public record is flawless. It wins awards. It sets standards. It is, by every measurable metric, exactly what it says it is.
A private intelligence network. A global field operations division. Classified response units capable of engaging Oni threats directly. And a deep archive of human history that no government knows exists.
The Foundation's emergency revival system — a NanoTank technology combining state-of-the-art nanite medicine with Eva's spiritual healing capabilities. It has a single confirmed success: the resurrection of Bors Adamsen in Book Two, Chapter Five, "Breath of Life." The Protocol's limits are unknown. Its failure conditions are something Eva refuses to discuss.
A former clandestine agency now fully under Foundation control, housing the world's most extensive collection of supernatural artifacts and classified research. Its seizure set the Black House back an estimated seventy-five years — which means the Black House has been trying to reclaim it ever since.
The Thing Behind the Black House
Akirl is not a faction. It is not a leader. It is the reason every faction exists. A cosmic horror entity — the existential malice of Fear itself — it resides in a dimensional rift at a location the Foundation's intelligence designates as Red Mountain. It cannot enter the physical world on its own. It requires a vessel.
The Black House's entire generational project — the Gaia Protocol, the manipulations of Book Two, and now the Transposition Ritual of Book Three — is a centuries-long effort to solve that single problem: how to bring Akirl here. The Chairman maintains a direct connection to Akirl that predates recorded history. What was promised in exchange for that connection has never been confirmed.
The Black House's master plan for Book Three: manifest Akirl in physical form using a human vessel — designated the Dark Muse — as the anchor point. The ritual is already in motion as The Host begins. Stopping it requires the Foundation to dismantle six coordinated factions simultaneously while protecting a target they cannot move.
The Black House's prior attempt to solve the same problem: use Alpha energy as the bridge for Akirl's manifestation. It failed because the Foundation intervened. But its failure accelerated the Transposition timeline — what was theoretical became operational the moment Gaia Project was stopped.
The Invisible Opposition
The Black House is the Foundation's oldest and most persistent adversary — a shadow institution of comparable age, opposite philosophy, and superior patience for patience's sake. Where the Foundation builds systems, the Black House corrupts them. Where the Foundation protects, the Black House positions.
Its supreme authority is the Chairman: a figure of unknown origin whose voice carries dimensional resonance and whose grip on the six factions is maintained through the Geas — a magical compulsion that creates absolute loyalty while preserving the illusion of free will. Breaking it costs power. Resisting it costs more. The Chairman's true identity and origin remain unknown even to Eva and Ado.
Asia — Japan, Korea
Leader: Il'Shihane (Red Kensei) — currently defecting. Former leader Lord Kargane: banished.
Shapeshifting goblinoid warriors with 2,700 years of accumulated alchemy. Developed "the Rot" — a Void corruption that spreads through Dharmic meridians. Status in Book Three: civil war between redemption and loyalist factions.

Leader: Archmage Angelique Dominia Lumina — a position passed through a ritual that consumes its predecessor.
Powerful ritualists, necromancers, and summoners of outer planar entities. Operating in Prague in Book Three, running divination support for the Transposition and manipulating a grieving artist as a secondary ritual target.
Americas / United Kingdom
Military Arm: Temple Corp — the most technologically advanced faction. Elite soldiers in matte-black powered armor with crimson triple-lensed optics.
Developed the Necroshot: void-infused ammunition that targets Dharmic meridians. Commander Lucius led the Paris ambush on Ado in Book Three's opening. The Black House's primary direct military threat.
Middle East
Leader: Iblis, Caliph — a powerful Efreet described as "a torrent of fire and flame that takes the form of a man." His true form stands ten feet tall.
Specialists in pain, grief, and soul contracts. The Eternal Kiln requires constant soul-fuel — every contract Iblis writes is ultimately feeding something older than desire. Cooperates with the Black House only when interests align.
China
Leader: Matriarch Xuanyan — pure logical entropy. Detached. Academic cruelty.
Masters of misinformation, digital manipulation, and bureaucratic curse-working. Their signature: making the Foundation distrust its own intelligence. Responsible for the São Paulo building collapses and the false financial trails that obscure the Transposition timeline.
Eastern Europe
Leader: Gehrud Trellir, Lich Necromancer of Grey Bones. Special ops unit: the Dark 6, led by Sword Master Lord Johann Ruttlieber.
Liches, vampires, necromancers, and revenants. Responsible for the 2028 Prague CIA station massacre. Currently infiltrating European governments through vampire shapeshifters. Trellir's homunculi have compromised Foundation HQ surveillance.
A Hegemony Divided
The Oni Hegemony was once a single Black House faction. In Book Three, Il'Shihane's defection fractures it into two opposing forces — one seeking redemption, one seeking revenge. The Foundation now navigates both.
Philosophy: Law & Peace — Status: Independent Ally / Eden Foundation
Led by Il'Shihane, the Red Kensei — former supreme leader of the Oni Hegemony. His defection from the Black House is not impulsive: it is the culmination of centuries uncovering the truth of how Lord Kargane corrupted his people. Il'Shihane seeks to restore the Oni to what they were before the Rot — honorable, lawful warriors. He approaches the Foundation not as a supplicant but as a peer, offering 2,700 years of accumulated intelligence on the Black House in exchange for a chance to earn what cannot be demanded: forgiveness.
Philosophy: Rage & Vengeance — Status: Aligned with The Black House
Led by Jinkou — Il'Shihane's former loyal disciple and cousin, now his most dangerous opponent. Jinkou's faction rejects redemption as weakness and views Il'Shihane's alliance with the Foundation as the ultimate betrayal of Oni honor. They remain aligned with the Black House and the Chairman, fighting to preserve the Hegemony's war footing and carry the Transposition ritual to completion. Jinkou is not merely loyal to the Black House. He is loyal to the version of the Oni that Il'Shihane is trying to bury.
The Wound That Started Everything
The Oni factions' hatred of Eva and Ado is not arbitrary. It has a name, a history, and a body count. At a point in antiquity — the exact date classified even within the Foundation's own archives — Adamocles Eden committed what the supernatural world now calls the Oni Genocide: a systematic and devastating campaign against the Oni populations who threatened to destabilize the human civilizations he and Eva had spent centuries protecting.
The campaign was not impulsive. It was deliberate, methodical, and successful. Which is precisely what made it unforgettable. In the aftermath, the legend of The Black Ghost was born — the name given by surviving Oni communities to the paired terror of Ado's combat persona and Eva's spiritual warfare. The name endures. The reputation it describes has never been allowed to fade.
The Oni Genocide was not a mistake in Ado's accounting — it was a necessary act executed with the moral clarity of someone who has watched civilizations collapse when supernatural threats go unanswered. That he carries it without apology does not mean he carries it lightly. The Black Ghost is the version of him that the Oni remember. It is also the version Eva has never stopped watching for.
The Oni Hegemony faction, originally honorable warriors, was corrupted over 2,700 years by Lord Kargane into what it became under Black House influence. The hidden truth revealed when Il'Shihane sought redemption: the path to corruption began with the genocide's aftermath, with survivors who had no framework left for existing outside of retaliation. The Black Ghost did not create the Black House. But it created the wound the Black House grew inside.
Weapons of the Void
The most significant tactical development of the modern conflict is the Necroshot — void-infused ammunition developed by Temple Corp using 2,700 years of Oni alchemical knowledge, specifically the Rot: the Void corruption that Lord Kargane cultivated within the Oni Hegemony as a spiritual weapon. Necroshot is the first recorded weapon capable of creating wounds that do not fully heal in a Pre-Pangean Alpha.
In the opening pages of The Host, the Paris ambush inflicts a Necroshot wound on Ado's left shoulder. The silver scar that results — a permanent mark that Eva tends with daily spiritual acupuncture and golden alloy needles — is the series' first visible proof that its protagonists are not invulnerable. It changes the nature of the conflict permanently.
A Void corruption developed by Kargane and cultivated within the Oni Hegemony over millennia. It spreads through the Dharmic meridians — the spiritual energy pathways of the body — and cannot be removed by conventional means. It is the biological weapon that made Necroshot possible, and its existence is one of the most dangerous pieces of supernatural knowledge currently in Black House hands.
Eva's treatment for Ado's Necroshot wound: golden alloy needles inscribed with pre-language symbols, administered daily to flush Void corruption from the Dharmic meridians. A technique older than medicine. An act that has become, over the weeks of Book Three, something neither of them discusses directly — an intimacy that the wound forced into their routine before either of them chose it.
Night Lords, Operating Philosophy
Gehrud Trellir's operating philosophy is simpler and colder than it first sounds: the Night Lords pull the strings of everyone under their influence, and anyone who tries to act of their own accord gets removed. It is not rhetoric. It is a stated order of operations, confirmed active as of Chapter 9 of The Host, Part 2 — and it comes with a literal chain of command.
Ruttlieber, Trellir's oldest disciple, has his own way of putting it — he calls the ones who resist "puppets who thought they could be a real boy." No cruelty in the delivery. Just correction. A puppet that starts believing it's a real boy has forgotten what it is, and the doctrine exists to remind it.
Kyr — the vampire lord who commands Dark 6 in the field — answers in kind: "Es wird geschehen, Meister." It will be done, Master. The language isn't decoration. Thralls, strings, cutting — the entire command structure of the Night Lords is built around the metaphor, because for Trellir it isn't a metaphor. It's how he actually sees the board.
Trellir ordered Dark 6 to remove Helena Engel, Germany's Security Secretary and one of Eva Eden's own allies — a direct move against the Foundation's international government network, and one neither Helena nor the Foundation knows is coming. Poland's Prime Minister sits on the same list. The doctrine doesn't need much reason. Resistance is reason enough.
Every mouse-shaped construct in a Foundation vent, every humanoid relic still working a legacy post, exists to put Trellir inside the room before anyone knows to look for him. From the Foundation HQ compromise to the São Paulo "two fruits" trap — where his own surveillance turned on his own Black House allies, Iblis and Lumina alike — the doctrine doesn't distinguish between enemy and ally. It distinguishes between string and puppet.
Not the Only Doctrine
The Puppeteer isn't unique. It's one of three parallel, genuinely coherent philosophies running the Black House's major factions — puppetry, dependency, and contract. None of them need to force anything at first. That's what makes all three worse than simple domination would be.
Night Lords
Control through unseen strings. Resistance gets cut, not punished.
Temple Corp
"They will come into the future by choice, chains, or screaming servitude." The tool is offered freely first — it looks like nothing but progress. Dependency does the real work next. Force is the last resort, only when the first two fail.
Caliphate
A cosmic furnace that runs on souls, fed by contracts freely signed. Every "yes" he collects is fuel for something that was never mortal.
Trellir doesn't need brute force because he's already inside the room, already holding the string, long before anyone thinks to check the vents. By the time you notice you're being watched, the trap has already closed — not because he moved fast, but because you never knew you were part of the puppet show to begin with.
Where the Modern Conflict Ignited
Prague is where the modern conflict in the EPF Verse ignites. A city with a particular density of hidden history — one of the oldest continuously inhabited capitals in Europe — it becomes the location of the operation that forces Eva and Ado out of carefully maintained obscurity in A Garden Lost.
The Prague arc establishes the series' key tensions: the Foundation's dual nature as public institution and covert operation; the Oni factions' increasing coordination; and the personal costs of a life lived in perpetual strategic concealment. It is also where the field team — Cole, Sullivan, Bors, and the others — are first assembled under crisis conditions. The arc's events also draw Mac into the Foundation's orbit: the 2028 CIA station massacre is the first official record of Night Lords activity in Central Europe, and it is Mac's account of it that convinces Eva the threat has reached a threshold she can no longer ignore.
A single compromised operation. The first visible crack in the Foundation's security. And a revelation about the Black House's penetration of the Foundation's closest circles that changes everything about how the Edens understand their own organization.
The Prague arc is not bloodless. It establishes early that the EPF Verse does not protect its characters out of sentimentality, and even the oldest, most prepared guardians in the world can be caught off guard by someone who has been patient enough.
